Exciting Places To Visit In Miami

I first visited Miami, Florida for a friend’s 40th birthday party. This means my first glimpse of the city was mostly hot clubs, bars, and trendy new restaurants. From that glimpse, I thought I was either too old or not old enough to properly enjoy Miami. Oh how wrong I was. The city is more than just a place to celebrate your 21st birthday or retire a la the Golden Girls. There’s so much more to Miami than just a party haven. Though it is a great place to party, especially if you’re looking to throw a Miami bachelorette party. But there are also plenty of amazing places to visit in Miami that don’t involve bottle service or cheesecake.

I recommend spending at least 3 days in Miami. That will give you plenty of time to do some Miami sightseeing and visit the unique places in Miami for adults listed below. From exciting museums in Miami to those iconic Miami beaches, and a trip to the Everglades, get ready to explore this vibrant city. I’ve even included a few day trips from Miami so you can explore some fun things outside the city if you have a few extra days.

As always, I’ve included accessibility information for disabled travelers. Fortunately, Miami is quite good when it comes to accessibility.

How To Get To Miami

To get to Miami, several transportation options are available. If you’re looking to fly in, Miami has an international airport with excellent connectivity to major cities worldwide. Many domestic and international airlines operate frequent flights, making it easy to reach Miami from almost anywhere. You may also choose to fly to nearby Fort Lauderdale International Airport. I’ve found doing so can save you a few bucks. From there it’s easy enough to get from Fort Lauderdale to Miami by bus.

If you're already in Florida, you might consider taking a train to Miami, as the city has a well-connected rail system that provides convenient access for travelers.

Best Time To Visit Miami

The best time to visit Miami is between March and May. During these months, you'll be able to enjoy perfect temperatures in the 70s while benefitting from off-peak hotel and airfare rates.

Summer is no time to be in South Florida due to the excessive heat and humidity. Fall should also be avoided because of hurricane season.

If you’re not planning on renting a car or using Lyft & Uber, here are a few tips on using Miami’s public transportation system.

The Free Miami Trolly System

The City of Miami's free, air-conditioned trolley service is a great way to get around the city. Each trolley is equipped with a wheelchair lift and a rack for two bicycles. The Miami Beach Trolly runs from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, with service about every 20 minutes. Routes cover Miami and Coral Gables. Metrobus

Miami-Dade Transit runs the Metrobus, covering 95 routes throughout the county. On the plus side, you can travel almost anywhere you need to go on the bus. The downside, irregular schedules and long wait time for bus transfers can turn a 30-minute trip in a car into a 90-minute trip by bus. There also are Express buses that run between Miami Beach and the Miami International Airport Metrorail station, to Broward County, and from Metrorail to South Dade. Regular fare is $2.25—exact change only—or a fare card. Discount plans are available for senior citizens, disabled travelers, students, county employees, and fare card holders.

Metrobus is wheelchair-accessible and offers wheelchair lifts.

Metrorail and Metromover

Metrorail covers 25 miles of Miami-Dade's most populated areas. Its 23 stations stretch from Hialeah to Dadeland. The newest station serves Miami International Airport. Metrorail fares are $2.25, and you must have a fare card, usually available from a machine at the station. Metrorail runs until 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends. Metrorail is a great option for reaching downtown Miami. Metromover is a free service that covers an over 4-mile route in and around downtown. It's a great option for traveling between downtown and Brickell.

Metrorail is wheelchair-accessible.

Big Bus Hop On Hop Off Tours

Another option for getting around the city is to purchase tickets for the Big Bus Hop On Hop Off Tour. The bus is wheelchair accessible and offers a nice audio tour of all the major sites in Downtown Miami and beyond.

For tickets visit Hard Rock Events.

Accessibility: Hard Rock Stadium offers wheelchair-accessible restrooms, seating, and parking. Wheelchairs are available for transporting guests to their seating location. Guests may ask upon stadium entry for wheelchair assistance. Guests must supply their own wheelchairs if they plan to sit in a wheelchair space during an event. Wheelchairs are not reserved in advance. During events, seating is available for guests with disabilities that do not require a wheelchair.

Ambulatory seating can be purchased in most seating areas. Wheelchairs will be available to bring guests to their seats, but will not be available for them to use during the event. Guests will need to notify the Guest Experience Guide that they would need a wheelchair at the conclusion of the event.

Parking spaces for guests with disabilities are located on the North, South, East, and West gates on a first-come, first-serve basis. All disabled guest parking is clearly marked with signage. The appropriate state-issued identification is required. The individual issued the state’s placard or license plate must be present in the vehicle.
