Best Places To Vacation In California

California is a great place to travel. And I’m not just saying that because I’ve called it home for the past 25 years. The Golden State has more national parks than any other state in the United States. a whopping 9 gorgeous destinations for nature lovers to explore. It’s also the perfect place to drive on an exciting road trip. Visitors can take the Pacific Coast Highway from Southern California north to San Francisco and onward to the Lost Coast and beautiful Northern California.

If city life is more your thing, we have plenty of those, like Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Sacramento. Our cities offer tons of entertainment options, historical sites, and fun things to do. They also have some of the best restaurants in the country.

Visiting California doesn’t have to be expensive either. Sure, you can find plenty of luxury destinations like Laguna Beach and Napa Valley, but you can also find a whole world of camping and glamping that won’t break the bank. In fact, some of the best vacation spots in California are off the beaten path and won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Muir Woods National Monument

My first great place to visit in California is Muir Woods. Muir Woods National Monument and its towering redwoods are a quick 30-minute drive from San Francisco, located right in Marin County. This federally protected national monument protects 240 acres of old-growth coast redwood forests. Word of warning, the weather in Muir Woods is very damp. It’s best to bring a raincoat and waterproof shoes. Because of the woods’ proximity to the Pacific Ocean, it’s often covered in a foggy marine layer which can lead to a very wet and sometimes slippery environment. It’s great for plant life and terrible for walking in flip flops, so come prepared.

To go from San Francisco to Muir Woods you have several options. First, is the shuttle going to Muir Woods from San Francisco. The Muir Woods shuttle is wheelchair accessible and operates weekends and holidays, running directly from SF to Muir Woods. You MUST make reservations beforehand. The SF to Muir Woods shuttle is extremely popular, and park space is limited. For more information, check out the Go Muir Woods website. The shuttle is $3.25 per person.

Your second option is a Muir Woods Group Tour from SF.

Finally, if you have your own car, you may wish. to make the drive yourself. But you should still arrange for a parking pass before you go as park space is limited. Parking reservations are $8.50 per car.

The park offers several accessibility features, including assistive listening devices, segments of accessible Muir Woods trails, braille brochure and trail map, large print brochure, accessible cafe and gift shop, audio-described brochures and wayside, and American Sign language orientation videos. The Muir Woods parking lot also has designated accessible parking.

Hiking at Muir Woods is accessible for all. The main trail is a mix of paved and boardwalk. It’s a 2-mile loop on level ground, which even for me, was a pretty easy hike. Muir Woods also has a 1/2 mile ADA accessible loop from the Visitors Center, through Founders Grove, to Bridge 2 and back. Other unpaved trails in Muir Woods exist from the main trail to neighboring Mt. Tamalpais State Park for those who are interested in more difficult hikes in Muir Woods.

The park sees up to 6,000 visitors a day during peak times. When I visited in September 2021 the park was full and not allowing additional guests, so again, please make sure you purchase your pass ahead of your trip. Entrance to the park is $15 per person. The park is open daily from 8 am till sunset.

2. Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree is known for its incredible rock formations, twisting Joshua trees, cholla cactus gardens, and winding hiking trails, but Joshua Tree isn’t just for rock climbers and hikers. The park is easily one of the most beautiful National Parks in the United States and there are plenty of unique things to do in Joshua Tree National Park that are accessible to people with disabilities.

Part of what I love so much about Joshua Tree is that it’s very easy to drive through the park and pull over at many of the biggest attractions. One doesn’t need to hike the many trails to tour the good stuff. Though, there are a few wheelchair-accessible, easy trails most anyone can enjoy. I’ve taken elderly family members with mobility issues here on day trips from Los Angeles and it’s always tremendous fun.

If you’re looking to stay longer than a day, you can easily camp in Joshua Tree. Wheelchair-accessible facilities are also available.

Things to Do in Joshua Tree National Park:

Explore the unique rock formations at Joshua Tree National Park.
Hike along the various trails in the park, such as the Hidden Valley.
Attend a stargazing event to view the night skies.
Visit the Joshua Tree Music Festival if the timing aligns.

3. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park, known for its stunning granite cliffs, pristine waterfalls, towering sequoias, and diverse ecosystems, offers a wide range of activities for visitors. When it comes to the best places to see in California it doesn’t get much better than the crown jewel of the National Parks System.

Yosemite National Park is located in the western Sierra Nevada mountains. It spans parts of Mariposa, Tuolumne, and Mono counties. Yosemite covers an area of approximately 1,187 square miles.

Things to do in Yosemite National Park:

Hiking - Yosemite boasts over 750 miles of hiking trails. Some of them like Lower Falls Trail are wheelchair-accessible.
Rock Climbing - Yosemite is a renowned climbing destination, particularly the vertical faces of El Capitan and Half Dome. Climbers of all skill levels can find guided climbs or allow for self-guided adventures. Even if you’re not physically able to rock climb, it’s fun to watch adventurous travelers scale these massive rocks.
Scenic Drives - Take advantage of the park's scenic drives, such as Yosemite Valley Loop Road: This drive offers access to key attractions, including Bridalveil Fall and El Capitan. Tioga Road: Open seasonally, it traverses the high Sierra and showcases alpine landscapes, lakes, and wildflower meadows.
Photography - Yosemite's dramatic landscapes provide endless opportunities for photography. Capture sunrise over Tunnel View, the reflection of Half Dome in the Merced River, or the iconic view of Yosemite Falls.
Wildlife Viewing - The park is home to diverse wildlife, including black bears, mule deer, and various bird species. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times for viewing wildlife.
Camping - Yosemite offers numerous campgrounds, each with its unique charm. Popular sites include North Pines Campground: Located near the Merced River and Yosemite Falls. Most campsites in the park have level, packed dirt, sites available. Most of these are not labeled as ADA but should be accessible.
Ranger Programs - Participate in educational ranger-led programs, including guided walks, campfire talks, and children's programs designed to enhance your understanding of the park's natural and cultural history.
Water Activities - During warmer months, enjoy activities like Swimming: Take a refreshing dip in the Merced River. Fishing: Anglers can try their luck in various streams and lakes throughout the park.
Winter Sports - In the winter, Yosemite transforms into a snowy wonderland. Popular activities include Cross-Country Skiing: Explore the park's numerous trails. Snowshoeing: Rent snowshoes and venture into the backcountry for a unique experience.
Visitors Centers - Stop by the park's visitor centers, such as the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center and the Ansel Adams Gallery, to gather information, view exhibits, and learn more about the park's features and history.

4. San Diego

San Diego is quietly one of the most beautiful cities in the United States. The city is known for its beautiful beaches, temperate climate, and vibrant culture. San Diego offers a wide range of activities for visitors, from exploring the historic Gaslamp Quarter to visiting the world-renowned San Diego Zoo.

5. Palm Springs

Palm Springs is a desert resort city in Riverside County, California. Known for its hot springs, stylish hotels, golf courses, and spas, it is a popular destination for relaxation and leisure. The city also boasts a vibrant arts scene, with galleries and museums showcasing modern and contemporary art.

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the surrounding desert landscape through hiking trails and scenic drives. Another fantastic attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

Located in Cabazon, California, the Cabazon Dinosaurs are one of the most iconic roadside attractions in the United States. These massive dinosaur sculptures, named Dinny the Dinosaur and Mr. Rex, were constructed in the 1960s and 1980s. Dinny, a 150-foot-long Apatosaurus, serves as a gift shop, while Mr. Rex, a Tyrannosaurus rex standing at 65 feet tall, houses a dinosaur exhibit. Visitors can climb inside Mr. Rex to learn more about dinosaurs and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape. Big Sur is a really special place in California. Visitors from near and far flock to the area to witness the stunning display of poppies, lupines, and other wildflowers carpeting the fields in shades of orange, purple, yellow, and pink. The Antelope Valley Superbloom is a must-see. Just be careful to stay on the paths and not trample the flowers. 16. Santa Catalina Island

Catalina Island is located approximately 30 miles off the coast of Southern California. Making it a short 1-hour ride by ferry from Los Angeles. While it’s super close to the mainland, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled many miles away. There are few cars on the island and transportation is by golf cart only. The island’s interior is a protected area where species like bald eagles and buffalo roam.

I’d be remiss if I left my hometown off this list.
