Santa Barbara, California, often referred to as the "American Riviera," is well known for its stunning coastline, Mediterranean-like climate, fantastic wine, party vibes on the famous State Street, and picturesque architecture. The city is characterized by its red-tile roofs, white stucco buildings, and lush gardens, which reflect its Spanish heritage. Visitors can travel to beautiful beaches, such as East Beach and Butterfly Beach, which are perfect for spending time sunbathing or playing water sports. And best of all, there are several wheelchair-accessible beaches with beach wheelchair rentals available… but more on that later.
The downtown area offers a mix of boutique shopping, fabulous food, and cultural attractions, including the Santa Barbara Mission and the historic courthouse with its stunning views. Additionally, the surrounding mountains provide opportunities for hiking and outdoor activities if you’re into that sort of thing. I happen to side more with the beach and wine life.
Santa Barbara, California is a great getaway and along with nearby Montecito, the area attracts many uber-wealthy people and celebrities like Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres, and Dick Wolf. (Just don’t try to sneak a peek at these homes as they’re all located off private roads with no opportunity to view them as I learned on my most recent trip.) But you don’t have to be super rich to enjoy this town. With UC Santa Barbara in town, you’ll also find a lot of activities and bars for the younger crowd.

How To Get To Santa Barbara
To get to Santa Barbara, California, you have several options depending on your starting point and preferences.
By Air
The Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is the main airport serving the area. Major airlines provide domestic flights to and from several cities. From the airport, you can rent a car, take a taxi, or use a rideshare service to reach your destination in Santa Barbara.
By Car
Santa Barbara is easily accessible by car, located along U.S. Route 101. If you're coming from Los Angeles, the drive typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. From San Francisco, expect around 5 to 6 hours of travel time.
By Train
Amtrak offers train services to Santa Barbara. The Pacific Surfliner route connects Los Angeles with Santa Barbara, providing scenic coastal views. The Santa Barbara train station is conveniently located close to downtown.
By Bus
Several bus companies, including Greyhound and FlixBus, operate routes to Santa Barbara from various locations. Bus travel can be a cost-effective option, but times may vary based on the route.
Local Transportation

Things To Do In Santa Barbara California
There are a number of great places to visit in Santa Barbara. But Santa Barbara is also a great place to enjoy relaxing at a resort and doing absolutely nothing. I’ve done both on my trips to SB. But if you’re interested in getting out into the city, doing some wine tasting, and enjoying some outdoor recreation I highly recommend the following Santa Barbara activities.
Visit The Beach
Santa Barbara is renowned for its beautiful coastline, offering a variety of beaches that cater to different interests and activities. Here are some of the best beaches to explore in the area in no particular order:
1. East Beach
East Beach is known for its wide sandy stretches and oceanfront location. It's a popular spot for sunbathing, picnicking, and beach volleyball. The nearby bike path makes it easy to access, and there are plenty of amenities, including restrooms and showers.
2. West Beach
Adjacent to the Santa Barbara Harbor, West Beach is perfect for families and those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere. The beach features gentle waves, making it suitable for swimming. Visitors can enjoy nearby playgrounds and picnic areas.
3. Leadbetter Beach
Leadbetter Beach offers stunning views of the Channel Islands and is popular with locals. It has a wide sandy area ideal for sunbathing and a designated swimming area with lifeguards on duty. The beach is also popular for surfing, especially for beginners.
4. Butterfly Beach
Nestled near the upscale Montecito area, Butterfly Beach is a more tranquil option. This beach is perfect for sunset views and leisurely walks. It’s less crowded than the city beaches, providing a serene environment.
5. Arroyo Burro Beach

Try A Bicycle Built for Two
One of the most fun Santa Barbara activities, these bikes are available for rent along the beach and are a great way to see the spectacular oceanfront. Of course, I had my fiance do most of the peddling as I was recovering from spinal fusion surgery and was unable to do much physical activity. So, I can safely say it was fun for me, and maybe a lot of hard work for him.
Old Mission Santa Barbara
Old Mission Santa Barbara, officially known as Mission Santa Barbara, is one of the most iconic landmarks in California and one of the top things to see in Santa Barbara. Founded on December 4, 1786, by Spanish Franciscan missionaries, it serves as both a historical site and an active parish. The mission was the tenth of the California missions and is often referred to as the "Queen of the Missions" due to its elegant architecture and beautiful setting.
The mission features a stunning Baroque façade, characteristic of Spanish Mission design, with twin bell towers that stand prominently against the backdrop of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Inside, visitors can explore the beautifully preserved church, which still hosts regular services, as well as the peaceful gardens that surround the property.
Old Mission Santa Barbara is not just a place of worship but also a museum that narrates the history of the mission era, local Indigenous communities, and the Spanish colonization of California. Accessibility: Due to the Old Mission’s varied walking surfaces, portions of the historic property may be inaccessible to some visitors. Much of the tour area is accessible via stone, tile, cement, or asphalt-paved walkways and can be reached in a variety of ways, including stair-free options for most tour areas. However, due to the historic nature of the Old Mission, certain walkways may have stairs, and be narrow, rough, uneven, or steep.
The public restrooms located at the front of the Mission are not accessible or ADA-compliant. Restrooms for use by visitors in wheelchairs and family needs can be accessed by inquiring at the Porter’s Office.
All areas of the tour route are accessible except the cemetery.

Try to stop by when you can also take a peek into the clock tower in the Bisno Schall Clock Gallery to see the impressive clock, which is only open to the public Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Surrounding the clock is an impressive 60-foot mural depicting the history of timekeeping. Yeah, you read that correctly, the history of timekeeping.

The property is very hilly and I had a lot of difficulty walking on my own. But the golf cart shuttles were very reliable.
