DAY 1
Day one is all about getting settled and grabbing dinner before you begin your fun weekend of activities in Santa Monica. I’ve picked my favorite Santa Monica restaurant to kick things off. I’m sure you’ll love this legendary dining spot as much as I do.
Chez Jay Santa Monica
Dinner And Drinks In Santa Monica
Your first night in Santa Monica begins with dinner and drinks at an iconic Santa Monica haunt, Chez Jay on Ocean Blvd. Established 1959 Chez Jay has been serving locals, celebrities, and visitors for over 60 years. They have been known as a celebrity hangout, a “dive bar” and a “classy joint” ever since. Chez Jay was declared a Santa Monica Historic Landmark in 2012.
It is said that Lee Marvin drove his motorcycle through the front door to order a drink. Daniel Ellsberg, who worked at the nearby Rand Corporation, passed the “Pentagon Papers” to a New York Times reporter at Table 10, also the spot where Warren Beatty entertained his many girlfriends.
Julie Andrews and Blake Edwards had their first date at the restaurant. And astronaut Alan Shepard smuggled a Chez Jay peanut into space and back. The “space nut” is still part of Chez Jay’s treasured collection of celebrity artifacts,
Backyard happy hour runs from 4-6 pm. The restaurant is open from 2 pm to 2 am on Fridays.

DAY 2
Day 2 is jam-packed with exciting stuff to do in Santa Monica. So get an early start and head out to the famous Santa Monica Farmers Market.

Breakfast At The Downtown Santa Monica Farmers Market
The Downtown Santa Monica Farmers Market is filled with California fresh produce and freshly made foods. It’s also where to go in Santa Monica for a little celebrity spotting. The farmers market is bike-friendly and even features a bike valet!
Held every Wednesday and Saturday, this market offers a diverse selection of organic fruits and vegetables, artisanal breads, handmade crafts, and gourmet prepared foods.
On Wednesdays, the market welcomes vendors from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, showcasing seasonal produce from California’s most dedicated farmers.
Saturdays offer the best experience, featuring additional vendors and a lively atmosphere filled with the sounds of live music. Shoppers can enjoy sampling local cheeses, fresh-pressed juices, and an array of baked goods. Hours are from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Accessibility: The Santa Monica Farmers Market is wheelchair-accessible. There are several parking lots near the Farmers Market, including Main Street Parking Lot 10, Main Street Parking Lot 9, and Lot 5 South.

Third Street Promenade
Stroll Third Street Promenade
The perfect place to do some shopping, Third Street Promenade should be on every Santa Monica to do list. This iconic outdoor shopping area offers a mix of retail stores, restaurants, and street performers, creating a lively atmosphere.
Spanning three blocks, the promenade is lined with palm trees and often features events and performances. Visitors can explore a variety of shops, from major brands to unique boutiques, catering to diverse tastes. Dining options range from casual eateries to upscale restaurants, providing a wide selection of cuisines to choose from. My top two picks are sushi hot spot, Sugarfish, and UOVO Pasta Bar.
In addition to shopping and dining, the Third Street Promenade hosts regular entertainment events. Street performers showcase their talents in music, dance, and other art forms, adding to the dynamic environment.
For those seeking a relaxing afternoon, the promenade features several seating areas where you can people-watch or enjoy a coffee or ice cream.
Accessibility: This busy city attraction also has ramps and access ways for easy exploring (and indulging). The promenade also has low curbs and audible crosswalk controls are available.

Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Park
Explore Palisades Park, the Santa Monica Pier, and Pacific Park
Your 3 days in Santa Monica would not be complete without visiting the most iconic part of the city. Palisades Park is the stretch of beachfront property surrounding the popular Santa Monica Pier. This palm tree-lined park runs along Ocean Avenue and overlooks the spectacular Santa Monica Beach. There are paved paths, making it easy to navigate and get some great views of the ocean.
When you’re done, make sure to head to the Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Park. Heads up, this section of the city is extremely touristy. However, the great views of the coastline looking out to Malibu, Venice, and beyond make it worth taking some time to stroll to the end of the pier. You’ll also find tons of arcade games, souvenir shops, and amusement park rides. There’s also an assortment of restaurants like Bubba Gump Shrimp, but I would not recommend dining here. There are far better places to eat, places you can only find in Santa Monica. Adventurous types can ride the Ferris wheel for truly fantastic views of the coast.
Accessibility: The paths of travel around Pacific Park are wheelchair accessible.
Most rides and attractions at Pacific Park are accessible to all guests, however, none of the rides and attractions are configured to accommodate a wheelchair within the ride system.
Guests with mobility impairments wishing to ride will need the assistance of a member of their party to fully utilize these areas. Guests using wheelchairs must be able to transfer from their wheelchairs onto each ride system. Pacific Park employees are not permitted to physically transfer guests to and from wheelchairs. It is recommended that guests who need help with transfer plan to visit with someone who can physically assist them.

Explore Venice Beach, The Venice Boardwalk, And Muscle Beach
The Venice Beach Boardwalk is a vibrant, bustling locale that draws both locals and tourists alike. Stretching approximately two and a half miles along the sandy shoreline, it offers a diverse range of activities, sights, and experiences.
Walking along the boardwalk, you’ll encounter an eclectic mix of street performers, artists, and vendors selling unique crafts and foods. The atmosphere is lively, often accompanied by the sounds of music, laughter, and the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. Skateboarders and rollerbladers navigate the iconic concrete paths, showcasing their skills and adding to the energetic vibe.

Alongside the beach, murals and street art adorn buildings, reflecting the creative spirit that Venice Beach is known for. Visitors can explore shops offering surf gear, beachwear, and souvenirs, while local eateries serve fresh seafood, healthy bowls, and street tacos.
For those interested in fitness, the Muscle Beach area attracts bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts from around the world. The outdoor gym features weightlifting equipment and a vibrant community of people dedicated to physical fitness.
Venice Beach also has quieter moments. Strolls along the shoreline provide scenic views, with sunsets that paint the sky in stunning colors. Families can enjoy picnics on the beach or simply relax while watching the waves.
The Venice Beach Boardwalk encapsulates a unique blend of culture, recreation, and relaxation, making it a must-visit destination.
Accessibility: The Venice Boardwalk is a wide, paved, level path. Just be careful not to cross onto the separate bike path used by bicyclists and rollerbladers.

Grab Dinner In Santa Monica
My dinner recommendation for Saturday night is a little place called The Galley. Established in 1934, The Galley is Santa Monica’s oldest restaurant and bar. Located on Main Street in Santa Monica, The Galley offers a range of steak, seafood, and pastas. I cannot recommend their giant portion of Chicken Parmesan enough. Their cocktails do not disappoint either, but perhaps The Galley is best known for its famous salad dressing. A well-guarded, secret recipe that keeps customers coming back.
The Galley offers a happy hour on their back patio daily from 4 pm to 7 pm.

DAY 3
Day has you enjoying the beach before heading out to explore more of nearby Venice. It offers a little shopping, some people watching, and a glimpse at the famous Venice Canals.

Compared to Third Street Promenade, Montana Avenue is a lot more laid back. The street is home to many restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and shops. You’re sure to find a great place for breakfast or coffee and a quick bite to eat. Favorites include:
The Courtyard Kitchen: Offering an elevated brunch menu with everything from avocado toast to shakshuka. Guests can also get traditional favorites like omelets, eggs benedict, and French toast. Wash it down with their delicious bellinis or something from the espresso bar.

The beach features a wide sandy shoreline, perfect for sunbathing, beach volleyball, and picnics. Lifeguard stations are present along the beach, ensuring that safety is a priority for visitors, especially families with children. The gentle waves also make it a great location for swimming and other water activities.
The beach is easily accessible by public transportation and offers numerous amenities, such as restrooms, showers, and bike rentals. Recreational facilities, including sports courts and picnic areas, encourage visitors to engage in various outdoor activities.
Accessibility: Santa Monica State Beach is wheelchair accessible, with many features to make it accessible for people with disabilities:
Beach wheelchairs: Free beach wheelchairs are available for rent at three Perry's Cafe locations on Ocean Front Walk. Heal the Bay Aquarium also offers free, two-hour manual beach wheelchair rentals on a first-come, first-served basis.
Accessible pathways: There are six points along the beach with wheelchair-accessible paths to the water.
Parking: There is beachfront parking.
Access ramps: There are wooden access ramps that lead closer to the water.
Accessible pier: There is an accessible pier.
Promenade: The Promenade is a pedestrian-only sidewalk.

Accessibility: Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice Beach, California is wheelchair accessible through the Department of Beaches & Harbors Beach Wheelchair Program. A wheelchair-accessible entrance typically has a minimum width of 3 feet (1 meter) for two people to stand next to each other. If there are steps, there should be a permanent or moveable ramp.

Visitors can take leisurely strolls along the charming pathways that meander through the neighborhood, providing opportunities to view the beautiful homes lined along the waterways. Bridges connect various parts of the canals, and the gentle sounds of water create a peaceful atmosphere.
The canals are not only a scenic spot for walking but also a great place for photography, as the reflections on the water create stunning visuals, especially at sunrise and sunset. Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular activities in the area, allowing visitors to experience the canals from a different perspective.

Accessibility: There are 5 designated accessible spaces in the paved parking lot off of North Venice Boulevard at the north end of the canals trail. All of them are van-accessible with striped access aisles. The trail surface is paved (with partial edge barriers and railings) and smooth.

Final Thoughts On Things To Do In Santa Monica
I love visiting Santa Monica. Every year my future in-laws visit from the Midwest and we spend a week in Santa Monica. The cool ocean breeze, ample shopping, and great restaurants make it an ideal spot to vacation. Plus, there are rides for the kids and ample arcade games on the pier.
The West Side also offers great accessibility with wide sidewalks and The Big Blue Bus which offers accessibility features like ramp boarding, LED screens, and audio announcements. Big Blue Bus also has the Mobility On Demand Every Day (MODE) program, which provides wheelchair vans for on-demand transportation. Reservations can be made on the Lyft app or by calling the MODE Call Center.
