Welcome To Mammoth Lakes California

I can’t believe I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 25 years and only now made the trip to Mammoth! I’d heard about Mammoth Lakes for years from friends and co-workers but, as I’m not a skier (any activity that involves repeatedly falling is a bad idea for someone with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) I had not made Mammoth part of my travel plans. Perhaps I was not giving the area a fair shake. It was time to search out some Mammoth activities that were EDS-friendly.

It turns out Mammoth, CA is not only a hot spot for skiing and snowboarding, it’s so much more. While there are a ton of things to do in Mammoth in the winter, there are also a bevy of Mammoth Lakes attractions that are suitable for summer, fall, and spring. From camping and hiking to birdwatching and lounging by these beautiful lakes, I’ll take you through all the fun attractions in Mammoth Lakes California. If you’re unfamiliar with Mammoth Lakes, fear not. Get ready to learn all about this amazing area and how to best plan your trip, including tips for travelers with mobility issues.

To start with, Mammoth Lakes is a town in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. It's known for Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain ski areas and nearby trails. There are five major lakes in Mammoth and over 100 minor lakes near Mammoth. The town is also home to Devils Postpile National Monument, a formation of basalt columns, and the towering Rainbow Falls. To the north, saltwater Mono Lake is dotted with gorgeous limestone towers. The famous Yosemite National Park, with its granite cliffs and ancient sequoias, is also nearby. Sounds enticing, no?

Rainbow Falls Top 10 Attractions In Mammoth Lakes

Rainbow Falls Mammoth Lakes, CA

Rainbow Falls

This impressive waterfall drops approximately 101 feet, creating a spectacular display, especially during the spring runoff when the water flow is at its peak. The falls are easily accessible via a scenic hiking trail that meanders through the lush landscape, providing opportunities to witness local flora and fauna along the way. The enchanting colors that play across the water, particularly during sunrise and sunset, give the falls their name, making it a popular spot for photography.

The trail leading to Rainbow Falls is approximately 1.5 miles one way, with gentle slopes that make it suitable for wheelchairs and those who may need extra support. Strategically placed benches provide rest stops along the route, allowing travelers to take in the tranquil surroundings and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

Earthquake Fault

One of the more unique attractions in Mammoth Lakes, this sizable fissure is not an earthquake fault caused by a single quake, as the name implies. Geologists now believe it is a system of fractures formed during a series of strong quakes when the Inyo Craters and Inyo Domes erupted centuries ago.

The Eastern Sierra region of California is notable for its geological activity, including the presence of the Mammoth Mountain fault. This fault is part of a complex tectonic environment that contributes to the area's frequent seismic events. With its proximity to the Sierra Nevada and a history of volcanic activity, Mammoth Lakes showcases unique geological features, such as hot springs and fumaroles, which are evidence of the underlying geothermal activity, but the famous Earthquake Fault may be the most interesting spot to view.

The monument is not only a geological wonder but also home to diverse ecosystems and wildlife.

Accessible trails winding through the park allow visitors to experience the stunning beauty of the surrounding landscape, including the adjacent Rainbow Falls, while providing opportunities for those with mobility challenges to explore this captivating environment.

Snowmobiling In Mammoth Lakes

Another one of the most popular Mammoth Lake activities is snowmobiling. I tried my hand at this on my most recent trip. I’ll save you the search for snowmobile rentals, there is only one snowmobile operation in Mammoth, and it is amazing. Mammoth Snowmobile Adventures offers guided excursions through the almost 100 miles of trails in Mammoth. Families, first-timers, and those that like to explore are all welcome to participate. So if you’re looking for things to do in Mammoth Lakes with kids, why not give snowmobiling a try? (Kids must be at least 5 years old and 42” tall.)

You can try your hand as a single rider or as a twosome. For my trip, I got my own snowmobile and tried to outrun my fiance through the meadow. Spoiler alert, he won. But I looked good trying.

You do need a certain amount of upper body strength to operate a snowmobile. No lie, it was a little tough with my sore joints. Especially since the ride lasts almost 2 hours. It was a little difficult for me to steer through the snow, but I’m happy I did it. I just mention it since steering could be very difficult if you’re not in decent shape or have arthritis. But it is one of the best things to do in Mammoth in winter. However, if you have doubts about your physical ability to steer, it might be best to be a passenger on a 2-person ride.

The mountain views and tree lines trails and meadows are spectacular. Just look at the video below.

The best time to visit Mammoth Lakes is during the late spring to early fall months, particularly from May to September. This period offers mild temperatures, blooming wildflowers, and plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and fishing. The summer months attract visitors looking to explore the numerous trails and stunning lakes, while the fall brings picturesque autumn foliage.
