Poznan Poland Eastern Europe Hidden Gems European Travel

Poznań, Poland

  1. Poznań, Poland

Poznań is the first city in Poland listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Located in the western part of the country on the Warta River, Poznań offers numerous historical sites, interesting attractions, and a lively cultural scene.

Firstly, visit the charming Old Town, a reminder of the city's long history. Walk along the wide streets and narrow alleys, and admire the beauty of the Old Market Square. Dominating the area is the Poznań Town Hall, a majestic symbol of the city and one of its most important historical buildings. Check out its unique facade and step inside to see the rich decorations and the interesting Town Hall Gallery.

Then, head to the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, also known as the Archcathedral Basilica in Poznań, a major landmark in the city. This impressive Gothic church is located on Ostrów Tumski Island - the oldest part of Poznań.

Make sure you also visit Cytadela Park and explore the city's rich history. Formerly a military fort, this massive park now attracts visitors with its beautiful surroundings and fascinating past. Discover the preserved fortifications, defensive walls, and bunkers, all offering an outdoor history lesson.

If you enjoy beautiful interiors, go to the Imperial Castle. See the architectural brilliance and rich decorations of the Throne Room and Ballroom. Take a walk in the castle gardens from which you will see the panoramic views of the city.

For your stay choose B&B Hotel Poznań Old Town. It’s a modern hotel conveniently located close to all the best attractions. it’s also wheelchair accessible.

Accessibility: Most trains and buses in Poznań have pull-out ramps for wheelchair users. Almost all of the notable buildings and hotels also provide ramp access and accessible restrooms. It is worth noting that while most of Poznań is accessible, many restaurants can pose an issue as there may be a step into the establishment. If you are visiting in the colder months and not dining outside, or if you need to use the restroom this may pose an issue. You can find wheelchair-accessible restaurants by searching Trip Advisor.

New Forest In Fall Unknown Places In Europe Hidden Gems 2023

The new Forest in fall

2. The New Forest, England

The New Forest National Park is a hidden gem of Europe on the south coast of England just a 1.5-hour train journey from London.  It’s one of the most famous forests in England and for good reason.  Because it has incredible scenery - think woodlands bathed in sunlight, centuries of history, and lots of fun things to do for adults and for kids.  What I love about it is that you can spend days there exploring and still not have seen everything that it has to offer!

One of my favorite things there is to explore the forest either by foot or by bike and try to spot a few of the famous free-roaming New Forest Ponies, yes ponies that wander wherever they want!  And then stop for a break at lunch, kick off my shoes, and go for a wild swim in one of the many rivers.

The New Forest is also on the coast, so if you’re into sailing, paddling, or any water sports you can head to any one of the coastal towns, such as Lymington to hire equipment and have some on-the-water fun.  There are also beaches to play or relax on - just don’t expect too much sand as they’re all mainly pebble.

For foodies, there are some amazing dining options to choose from and most local pubs offer great home-cooked food.  Let’s face it, nothing beats a country walk finished off by a roast dinner in a pub!  The New Forest has lots of accommodation options, but by far the best is the award-winning Chewton Hotel - this 5-star luxury estate even has treehouses you can stay in.

Accessibility: The New Forest offers a number of wheelchair-accessible shuttles and tour options. You can find out more about accessibility from the New Forest website.

Monsanto Portugal Douro Valley Secret Europe Hidden Gems 2024

Monsanto, Portugal

3. Monsanto, Portugal

Monsanto, Portugal, can easily be described as one of the best-hidden gems in Europe. Located near the Spanish border, it is far enough off the main road trip route to be left off most tourists' itineraries, yet still easily accessible for those with their own vehicle.

Due to the traditional stone buildings and rich medieval charm, Monsanto was named Portugal’s most Portuguese village and because of this, you won’t find any chain hotels or touristy shops. The council here works hard to maintain the heritage feel of this unique village which can only be truly appreciated by wandering through its narrow streets. If you did want to stay here for a night or two, we recommend the GeoHotel or one of the few family-owned boutiques in the heart of the village. GeoHotel offers wheelchair-accessible rooms.

Monsanto's historical significance includes its castle, which dates back to the 12th century. The views from the castle are breathtaking, providing a panorama of the surrounding landscape. It was here that many scenes from the TV series "House of the Dragon” were shot too!

Some of the other things to do in Monsanto include visiting the old clock tower, snapping a photo of the Church of The Holy Saviour, and finding the most photographed building in the village with its giant boulder as a roof!

Accessibility: Although the village is accessible, some of the highlights of the tour, the castle, walls of Monsanto, and the sets from the series House of the Dragon are not wheelchair, trolley, or stroller accessible. If you take a tour of the castle you will need to hike up a mountain, the walk is relatively short and of easy-to-moderate physical demand.

Bled Slovania Main Island Unknown European Destinations Hidden Places In Europe

Lake Bled

4. Bled, Slovenia

Bled is one of the most romantic and beautiful places in Europe.

Located in the heart of Slovenia, Lake Bled is known as a true fairy tale destination. The biggest highlight of the city is the lake itself, which features incredibly crystal clear water and a small island in the middle.

You can visit Lake Bled all year round but the best time to go is during the spring and summer. It is a popular spot in Slovenia so it gets busy during sunny summer days, so we recommend visiting in the shoulder seasons if you can. May and September are the best months. You also find the best price on rooms outside of the busy season.

The best views of Lake Bled can be seen from the viewpoint of Ojstrica (it does require a short hike to get there) or from the Bled Castle. It is also possible to drive all the way up to the castle, and they have parking on site.

There is also a walking path that goes around the entire lake. It is 6 km in total and allows you to enjoy this beautiful place from every different angle.

Hotel Triglav provides excellent views of the lake and is wheelchair accessible.

If you want to get even more off the beaten path than Bled, you can also check out more of beautiful Slovenia with a journey through Slovenia’s mountain pass.

Accessibility: The asphalt road along Bled Lake is suitable for wheelchairs. You can also visit the centre of Bled, and walk under Bled Castle to Velika Zaka. Find out more information about accessible travel in Bled from the Bled website.

Meteora Greece Europe Hidden Gem Cities Hidden Gems European Cities

Meteora, Greece

5. Meteora, Greece

Meteora is located in north Greece, connected to Athens via a fast highway. Or you can take a train from Syntagma Square in Athens. I do urge you to put this special place on your Greece mainland itinerary. The landscape here is surreal with over 190 monoliths. And in the 14th and 15th centuries, monks with the help of the local population made 24 monasteries on top of these monoliths. About 6 of them survive today and are functioning.

You can visit any or all of the 6 monasteries and see their way of life. The chapel within the largest of them, Great Meteoron, is quite impressive. It is easy to drive up to these monasteries but then you have to take steps to climb to the top. A better way is to hike to some of them, admiring the lovely landscape.

Meteora is heaven for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure lovers. Biking, hiking, rock climbing, via Ferrata, ATVs, and whatnot. We enjoyed both a hiking tour and an e-bike tour to get a taste of Meteora. There are 2 small towns built around this area, and you can base yourself in either: Kalambaka or Kastraki. The Divani Meteora Hotel is wheelchair accessible and comes highly recommended.

Accessibility: Accessible Europe Holidays provides wheelchair-accessible tours of Mereora and cruise shore excursions. This includes van-adapted transport. See the Accessible Europe Holidays website for more details.

Berlengas Portugal Pico Island Hidden Gems Europe Summer Undiscovered Europe

Berlengas Islands, Portugal

6. Berlengas Islands, Portugal

When you're looking for an off-the-beaten-path location in Portugal, the Berlengas Islands are incredible! Located off the coast of Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean they’re easily reached by ferry. You step on board a ferry in Peniche, which is wheelchair accessible. After around 40 minutes, you arrive at Berlenga Island, the main and only island you can visit within the nature reserve. There is a ramp to the restaurant, where you can enjoy lunch and incredible views or head over to the beach for a fresh dip in the ocean.

Berlenga Grande is a fantastic spot for hiking, but if this is not an option, you can join a cave tour in a glass-bottom boat. You'll see the famous fort of São João Baptista, the blue cave, and the elephant rock. The island is also home to many birds, mainly seagulls, that will surround the island. If you travel in spring, you will also enjoy the many flowers which make the islands incredibly colourful.

Most visitors come to Berlengas for a day trip from Peniche or Lisbon, but there is an option to stay overnight. Inside the Fort São João Baptista is a hostel with kitchen facilities. You'll need to bring food and drinks from the mainland, and the bedrooms are on the first floor without disability facilities. Below the restaurant is a bed and breakfast with five rooms available. They are basic, but perfect if you want to stay a night in nature. More (and accessible) accommodations are available in Peniche, which is a great city to explore the rest of this part of the Portuguese coast.

Lugano Switzerland Hidden Gem Countries In Europe Hidden Places To Visit

Lugano, Switzerland

8. Lugano, Switzerland

You may not think of Switzerland with the phrase ‘hidden gem’, but you may only know the top locations and cities. For a smaller, but just as fun and picturesque place to visit, you should consider the city of Lugano in Switzerland.

This southern city is located in the Ticino canton, which is south of the Swiss Alps and not as popular or busy with internationals visiting Switzerland. Often the Ticino canton in general is skipped, but we don’t know why as it has so much to see and do!

The location is unique as the city is located right on the lakeside of Lake Cereso (also known as Lake Lugano). You can walk the city streets, lined with some fancy stores but also lots of boutiques and local Italian cuisine-themed restaurants.

There are lots on offer, with events throughout the year, funiculars from the city to the local mountain peaks (Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè), and beautiful parks and beach areas for relaxing. It’s like being in paradise, surrounded by palm trees and sunshine. You can also head out onto the water with the local boats or pedalos, or else swim from the beach!

For a local gem for a restaurant, head to Salotte Brè at the top of the mountain Brè. They have the most delicious options on the menu and fresh daily treats. It’s accessible by car, funicular, and bus - or a hike if you prefer!

Hotel Splendide Royal Lugano is a 5-star wheelchair-accessible Hotel in the heart of Lugano.

Accessibility: Lugano offers a range of fully accessible facilities available to travelers with disabilities – hotels, restaurants, and means of transport. The local tourist offices will be able to give you suggestions for accessible hotels, restaurants, museums, tours, and events.

Verona Italy Cheap Hidden Gems In Europe European Hidden Gems Reddit

Verona, Italy

9. Verona, Italy

Verona, a beautiful city in northern Italy's Veneto region, is a hidden gem worth visiting in Europe. Often overlooked for Venice and Milan, Verona is full of history, romance, and charm. Verona is the sister city of New York, and while it’s not nearly as bustling it’s filled with history, art, and culture.

One of the city's highlights is the ancient Roman amphitheater, the Arena, where you can catch amazing opera performances in the summer. Verona is also famous for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and you can visit Juliet's House.

If you’re a Romeo and Juliet fan I recommend you stay at the Relais Balcone di Giulietta, one of the best hotels in Verona. This hotel shares the courtyard with Juliet's House, so you can see the famous balcony and statue anytime without the crowds. The hotel is also wheelchair-accessible.

Walking around Verona's historic center you'll find medieval and Renaissance buildings, lovely squares like Piazza delle Erbe, and the impressive Castelvecchio bridge and museum. Make sure to also walk across Ponte Pietra and take in the views from Castel San Pietro.

If you’re a foodie, try the local dishes like risotto al Amarone, and visit the nearby Valpolicella wine region if you’re a wine lover.

Accessibility: Every year, Verona strives to improve accessibility. City car parks have reserved spaces for blue badge holders. Museums are accessible and free of charge for people with disabilities. For more information, visit the Accessible Verona website.

Mostar Bosnia Hidden Gems In Europe Travel Hidden Gem Countries

Mostar, Bosnia

10. Mostar, Bosnia

The bittersweet history of Mostar has given the charming town a truly unique vibe for visitors to enjoy. A visit to the quirky spot can differ significantly depending on when you visit, as summer brings very hot temperatures.

To start with you should walk across the Stari Most in the centre of the town, which was once destroyed during the war. Following its reconstruction in 2004, it has maintained its Balkan character, and once again offers visitors the best views of Mostar. The more adventurous tourists jump from the 20-metre-high bridge into the chilly Neretva River.

If culture is on your agenda, the bazaars are abundant with local souvenirs, patterned tapestries, and some local coffee, which is renowned for its strength. The market prices are significantly lower than neighboring Balkan countries, so a bargain is guaranteed.

To admire the resilience of the locals, you should head to Alekse Šantića Street, which is now filled with colourful murals on the buildings which were once the front line during the war. The bright art matches the smiles that the locals will greet you with. The original bullet holes are still prominent in some of the buildings, reminding visitors what the locals had to endure in recent history.

A great spot to stay in Mostar is right by the Stari Most area, which is close to the busy bazaars, an array of Bosnian restaurants serving cheap local cuisine, and if you choose a hotel on the banks, you can enjoy splendid views of the beautiful Neretva River.

If the beautiful nature in Bosnia captures your heart, then many International tourists combine Mostar with the beautiful Kravica waterfalls located nearby.

Accessibility: Mostar is improving when it comes to accessibility. For a glimpse into wheelchair accessibility in Mostar check out this Youtube video on accessible Mostar.
