The Las Vegas of the East Coast, Atlantic City, NJ is known for its casinos, boardwalk, salt water taffy, and being the inspiration for the popular board game Monopoly. But there’s much more stuff to do in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
If you’re looking for what to do in Atlantic City you’ve come to the right place. From amusement park rides and boardwalk games to gambling in the casinos, Atlantic City is fun for the whole family. But first, a few facts about Atlantic City you may not have known.
Atlantic City was the birthplace of Miss America. The first pageant was held in September 1920 as a way to draw tourists to the area.
The Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall Organ is the largest instrument in the world and literally one of the biggest attractions in Atlantic City. You can hear it every weekday between May and October at noon during a 30-minute concert.
Atlantic City is home to the United State’s first boardwalk.
The tallest lighthouse in NJ is located here.
The Whitehouse Sub Shop on Arctic Ave features the pink towel Sinatra used to mop his brow during his final show in Atlantic City.
During World War II, Convention Hall was converted into a U.S. Army training facility and squads practiced mock beachfront invasions.
11,000 pounds of saltwater taffy are produced here every day.

How To Get To Atlantic City
You can travel to Atlantic City via train, plane, bus or automobile.
AIRPORT, RAIL & HIGHWAYS
The Atlantic City International Airport is located a few minutes from the city and offers shuttle, taxi, and rental car transportation.
Philadelphia International Airport is a quick 60-minute drive via the Atlantic City Expressway.
Train
Rail service provided by New Jersey Transit arrives and departs through the rail terminal immediately adjacent to the Atlantic City Convention Center.
Highway
From the North, major interstate highways connect with the Garden State Parkway South, to the Atlantic City Expressway.
From the South, I-95 to Delaware Memorial Bridge to Route 40 to Route 322. Or via Lewes, Delaware, take the Cape May-Lewes ferry to the Garden State Parkway North to the Atlantic City Expressway.
From the West, via Philadelphia, Walt Whitman Bridge, or Ben Franklin Bridge to North-South Freeway to Atlantic City Expressway.
Bus
There is frequent bus service from New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC via all major carriers.
Public Transportation
Within the city, everything is readily accessible via public transportation on New Jersey Transit buses. All buses have either a lift or a ramp to provide access for wheelchairs and those with mobility aids. All of the buses can also “kneel”, that’s where the bus lowers to meet the curb, and this can be done by simply asking the bus driver for assistance. The ever-popular 13-passenger jitneys move the entire length of Pacific Avenue, parallel to Atlantic City's famous Boardwalk, to the Marina District, and to the Convention Center. Taxi service is also available with a maximum fare of $13 per ride between any two points within the city’s borders.

Where To Stay In Atlantic City
When in Atlantic City, you’ll want to stay close to the action on the boardwalk. There are plenty of hotel-casino options that can serve as your home away from home and keep you close to great restaurants, entertainment, and that beautiful beach.
Luxury
Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is widely considered the nicest property in Atlantic City. (Despite my crummy picture) The property has a number of amenities including a casino, a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, a spa, and a garden. This 4-star resort offers a 24-hour front desk and an ATM. There are 19 restaurants onsite. All rooms in the resort are fitted with a flat-screen TV and come with a private bathroom. The rooms at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa feature air conditioning and a desk.
The Borgata features ADA-accessible rooms, with lowered sinks, raised toilets, grab rails, and wheelchair-accessible features.

Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City:
Another great hotel option is Harrah’s, which has been recently renovated. There are several ADA rooms at this hotel with roll-in showers. These premium rooms are available in both towers, giving great views to look out on and a nice space to relax in. The hotel itself also has restaurants, an indoor pool, and a casino, so you could stay at the hotel for a resort-style experience in addition to exploring Atlantic City. This hotel does have more ADA room options compared to its sister hotel, Caesars, but both are good options for staying while in the city.
The Hard Rock Hotel in Atlantic City offers several ADA rooms, including a queen-size or king-size bed, in their north and south towers. This is a great location for views of the Atlantic Ocean and relaxing in style. The beds have pillow-top mattresses and luxury linens for a comfortable and restful sleep. The ADA-compliant bathrooms have a shower bench seat, roll-in shower, and adjustable shower head. Other room features include a lowered peephole, door latch, thermostat, and curtain pulls. ADA rooms also include a hearing-impaired kit and doorbell.

What To Do In Atlantic City, NJ
Whether you’ve come with the family or you’re looking for more adult Atlantic City activities you’re sure to find something for everyone. I have fond memories of sitting on this New Jersey beach building sandcastles with the old coin buckets from Caesar’s as my parents spent time playing the slot machines inside. Gone are the old coin buckets, (and the ability to leave your kids unattended on the beach while you gamble) but it’s still a great place to build sand castles and make bad choices.
Below are some unique things to do in Atlantic City that will make for a fun-filled vacation.
The famous Atlantic City Boardwalk
Atlantic City Boardwalk
Atlantic City is home to the first boardwalk in the United States. It is still the largest boardwalk in the world. Much nicer than walking down the Las Vegas Strip, (and much cooler in those summer months), the Boardwalk is the ideal place for a stroll.
Originally opened in 1870, the Atlantic City boardwalk is home to casinos/hotels, retail stores, restaurants, and amusements. The wooded path is ideal for early morning biking, window shopping, wandering aimlessly, or reevaluating your life choices after losing all your money at the craps table. Visitors can also hop on the tram car for a ride from one end to the boardwalk to the other to avoid walking the distance.
The boardwalk itself is wheelchair accessible and is a short distance from many popular hotels. The boardwalk is wide and relatively flat, with wooden planks spanning the entire length. Shops and restaurants along the boardwalk are generally wheelchair accessible as well.
2. Steel Pier Amusement Park
Located on the world-famous boardwalk in North Beach Atlantic City, just steps from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and New Jersey’s beautiful miles of beach, the Steel Pier is shore to excite you. See what I did there?
Once billed as "The Showplace of the Nation," Steel Pier first opened its doors in 1898. The pier features numerous rides, restaurants, and games. From a carousel to scarier thrill rides, like the slingshot, Steel Pier is where to go for fun. The biggest attraction on the pier is The Wheel, a 227 feet tall gondola ride. The Wheel features 40 temperature-controlled gondolas looking out over the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.
Food choices on the pier feature carnival favorites like funnel cake, ice cream, and pizza, but because this is the beach, there are plenty of seafood, options as well.
The Pier also features an event space and plenty of carnival-style games for kids and competitive folks. There are small to large prizes that deliver big excitement. Shoot hoops, squirt guns, work the cranes and have fun trying to win fabulous prizes.

3. Atlantic City Aquarium

Hands down one of the most popular activities in Atlantic City, NJ is gambling. You can find a host of casinos from Ocean Casino Resort to Tropicana Atlantic City and more, you’re sure to find plenty of slots and table games to foster your dream of striking it rich.

Make sure you sign up for those casino loyalty programs to earn valuable points while you play. It’s a surefire way to get those comped rooms. I use my card all the time in Vegas and AC and have earned valuable discounts and comps on buffets, shows, and rooms.
8. Atlantic City Ballet
Atlantic City is also a great place to explore fine arts like ballet. One of the classier activities in Atlantic City, The Atlantic City Ballet is known for its unique blend of classical and contemporary ballet. 9. Atlantic City Beach
The Jersey Shore is one of the first things that comes to mind when you picture the Jersey beach town of Atlantic City. Visiting the beach is a fun activity that also offers lots of accessibility. Many of the Atlantic City beaches offer free access to the beach, where you can watch the water, collect seashells, have a great time in the sand, stroll the paths, or even go for a swim.
The Jersey Shore is broken up into districts. Fortunately, each of the 11 districts has a wheelchair-accessible beach. Features include outdoor showers, ADA-compliant restrooms, beach access ramps from the boardwalk, a beach access mat at Bartram Ave, and beach surf chairs. Beach surf chairs are available upon request from beach patrol, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Several locations along the boardwalk provide wheelchair access ramps to the beach, either as a wooden ramp or as access to the beach mat path, depending on which location you visit.
10. Absecon Lighthouse
One of the more popular things to do in Atlantic City, New Jersey, The Absecon Lighthouse is a decommissioned lighthouse that still has its original lens in place at the top. While it’s not an in-use lighthouse, the light is turned on every night to be enjoyed by everyone. The lighthouse is 171 feet tall, making it the tallest lighthouse in the state of New Jersey. It has 228 steps from the bottom to the top. Visitors can climb the tower for a fee, but the climb is obviously not wheelchair accessible.
The property around the lighthouse is wheelchair accessible, so everyone can visit the location, see the light, and explore the grounds. In addition to the lighthouse, there is a Keeper’s Cottage, outdoor exhibits, and a community garden.

11. Lucy The Elephant
When it comes to iconic Atlantic City attractions it doesn’t get more iconic than Lucy The Elephant, America’s first roadside attraction. Standing proudly at six stories tall, this magnificent elephant-shaped structure has captivated visitors for over a century. A true testament to architectural marvel, Lucy offers a glimpse into the city's rich history. Originally built in 1881 to attract prospective real estate buyers, Lucy has since become a beloved symbol of Atlantic City, drawing tourists from far and wide with her whimsical allure. As you ascend the winding staircase inside, you are surrounded by fascinating historical artifacts and breathtaking views of the Atlantic coastline. Whether you admire her from afar or step into her towering presence, Lucy the Elephant is a must-see destination that leaves a lasting impression on all who encounter her.
Lucy is not wheelchair-accessible, however, guests can still admire her beauty from the outside.
