Fortunately, many of the best museums in Houston, Texas are conveniently located in the Houston Museum District, the cultural heart of the city. Here you’ll find museums exploring everything from dinosaurs to the African-American experience. If you travel to Houston, I highly recommend spending a day or two exploring some of the amazing museums below. Read on to find out my eight favorite museums in Houston, TX.

Buffalo Soldier National Museum

If you're craving a dose of rich United States history, make sure to visit the Buffalo Soldier National Museum. Located in Houston's historic district, this museum pays homage to the heroic African-American soldiers who served in the United States Armed Forces.
The Buffalo Soldiers were a segregated group of African-American soldiers who played a significant role in the settlement and development of the American West.

All NASA Tram Tour trams and Level 9 Tour buses are equipped with lifts. Guests may request this service from a crew member at the boarding location.

All Space Center Houston theaters, exhibits, and attractions are wheelchair-accessible, including Breakfast with an Astronaut and Independence Plaza. All theaters have ground-level entrances.

A limited number of complimentary wheelchairs are available at the Guest Services Desk on a first-come, first-served basis.

Restrooms throughout the center are accessible to guests with disabilities.

For those craving a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, an elevator ride to the top of the monument is a must. The observation deck offers breathtaking vistas of the Houston Ship Channel, the verdant marshes of Buffalo Bayou, and the sprawling metropolis that stretches far beyond the horizon.

To truly grasp the significance of the San Jacinto Monument, one must understand the events that unfolded on the nearby battlefield. It was on this hallowed ground, on April 21, 1836, General Sam Houston and his Texian troops clashed with General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's Mexican army. In a desperate bid for freedom, the Texians launched a surprise attack, catching the Mexican forces off guard. The Battle of San Jacinto lasted only 18 minutes but resulted in a resounding victory for the Texians, securing their independence from Mexico.

Park in the designated handicapped spaces close to the entrance to the circle from Vista Road for the closest proximity to the wheelchair ramp.

One basic wheelchair is available for use within the museum. If you require assistance, please call the museum at 281.479.2421 and ask for Visitor Services to arrange for its use in advance.

Space for wheelchair seating is available in the Jesse H. Jones Theatre for Texas Studies.

Headsets are available to assist hard-of-hearing individuals watching ‘Texas Forever!! The Battle of San Jacinto” in the Theatre.

A visually impaired person touring the exhibit gallery may request a guided tour with a staff member who will escort the guest through the gallery and read exhibit labels.

On the Observation Deck, there is a step-up to look through the viewing scopes that are at some of the windows.

On the Observation Deck, the windows begin 44 1/2 inches above the floor, and although a seated person can look out to the distance, it may be difficult to look down toward the base of the Monument. Views from the windows are included in the orientation presentation shown on the Observation Deck.

6. Holocaust Museum Houston TX
